Yossi Shavit is the Zalman and Sima Weinberg Professor of Social Stratification and Inequality at Tel Aviv University.  He is also head of the B.I. and Lucille Cohen Institute for Public Opinion Research and directs the Educational Policy Program at the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel.  
Yossi Shavit received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. He joined the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Tel Aviv University in 1996 and was its chair in 2001-2004.  Previously, he was on the faculty of the European University Institute in Florence and of the University of Haifa. He is an active member of ISA-RC28 and served as its Secretary during 1998-2002. He is also a member of the honorary SRA (Sociological Research Association) and has received both the Alon and Spencer Fellowships. His main areas of interest include Social Stratification, the Sociology of Education and Research Methods.
